01Why Stash requests access to Gmail
Stash can automatically import financial transactions from transaction notification emails sent by your bank.
To provide this feature, Stash requests read-only access to Gmail using the gmail.readonly permission.
Gmail integration is optional. You can use Stash without connecting a Gmail account.
02How Gmail access is used
When Gmail import is enabled, Stash uses read-only access to identify emails that may contain financial transaction information.
For recognized transaction emails, Stash extracts the information needed to create a transaction, such as:
- Transaction amount
- Currency
- Merchant or transaction description
- Transaction date
- Relevant account or card information
- Other information required to categorize the transaction
This allows Stash to automatically turn a bank transaction email into a transaction in your budget.
03Why read-only Gmail access is required
Banks use many different email formats, and important transaction details are often contained in the body of the email, not only in its subject or metadata.
For this reason, access to Gmail metadata alone is not sufficient to provide automatic transaction recognition.
Stash uses the gmail.readonly scope so it can read the information necessary to identify and process transaction emails.
04What Stash cannot do
Gmail access is read-only.
Stash cannot:
- Send emails from your account
- Modify your emails
- Delete your emails
- Move emails
- Mark emails as read or unread
- Change your Gmail settings
Connecting Gmail does not give Stash your Google password or login credentials.
Authentication is handled directly by Google using OAuth.
05How your Gmail data is handled
Gmail data accessed by Stash is used only to provide the user-facing automatic transaction import feature.
Email content is processed locally on your device to identify financial transactions and extract the information required for your budget.
Stash does not store the contents of your Gmail messages on Stash servers.
Stash does not sell Gmail data, use Gmail data for advertising, or use Gmail data to build advertising profiles.
06You stay in control
Gmail integration is optional and can be disconnected at any time.
You can review transactions created from Gmail messages and edit or delete them from Stash.
You can also revoke Stash’s access to your Google Account at any time through your Google Account security settings.
07Limited Use
Stash’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs complies with the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
